22. Methanogenic Activity in Sediment from Leg 64, Gulf of California
نویسندگان
چکیده
We detected methanogenic bacterial activity in 6 of 12 sediment samples from Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) locations in the Gulf of California. When samples were incubated anaerobically for three weeks at temperatures of 10 or 22°C, we found activity to sediment depths of about 12 meters. The methanogenic bacteria were inhibited by CHC13 or 2-bromoethanesulfonic acid and were generally stimulated by H2.

Early Holocene decadal - scale ocean variability recorded in Gulf of California laminated sediments
Scanning electron microscope examination of Holocene laminated sediment from Guaymas Basin, Gulf of California, resolves up to five depositional events per year. Each lamina/sublamina of an early Holocene section of continuously laminated sediment was recorded from backscattered electron imagery photomosaic analysis. Diatom mat laminae, composed predominantly of Thalassiothrix longissima, are a...

The activity concentrations of 226Ra, 232Th, 40K and 137Cs in water and sediment samples from hot springs of Mahallat and soil samples from their neighboring environs have been determined using two high resolution high purity germanium (HPGe) detectors with relative efficiencies 38.5% and 55%. The activity concentrations of 226Ra, 23...
متن کاملOn the relationship between methane production and oxidation by anaerobic methanotrophic communities from cold seeps of the Gulf of Mexico.
The anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) in the marine subsurface is a significant sink for methane in the environment, yet our understanding of its regulation and dynamics is still incomplete. Relatively few groups of microorganisms consume methane in subsurface environments--namely the anaerobic methanotrophic archaea (ANME clades 1, 2 and 3), which are phylogenetically related to methanogeni...
متن کاملInfluence of sediment input and plate-motion obliquity on basin development along an active oblique-divergent plate boundary: Gulf of California and Salton Trough
Transtensional basins have formed along the Pacific-North America plate boundary in the Gulf of California and Salton Trough region during Late Cenozoic time. Axial basins occupy a 50–60 kmwide belt along themainplate boundary, and change from sedimentstarved oceanic spreading centers in the south that are oriented perpendicular to long NW-striking transform faults, to oblique N-trending pull-a...

Isolation of autochthonous bacteria from marine sources as a potential probiont in biocontroling against pathogenic Vibrio species in the shrimp culture industry was the aim of current research. A total of 198 bacterial strains were isolated from pond water, sediment, hepatopancreas and gut samples of shrimps after culturing the samples on Tryptic Soy Agar and incubated at 30 °C for 24-48 h.
